Back2. Sopot / Salzburg – Poetry. Sopot, Poland 17-21 May 2011
Back 2 is a conference and festival focused on contemporary and modern poetry. The theme of the conference is contemporary poets’ return to poets of the first half of the twentieth century: Yeats, Eliot, Pound, H.D., Carlos Williams, Moore, Zukovsky, cummings, Auden, Trakl, Benn, Rilke, Brecht, Tuwim, Leśmian, and others. We are interested in discussions of borrowings, reworkings, rejections, and disputes. Our main concern is with contemporary English, German and Polish poetry, although we will consider papers that deal with a similar phenomenon in other European languages.

Zajac paints Beckett
Iwona Zajac, a street-art artist, the author of the celebrated “People” and “Shipyard” murals, is painting a portrait of Samuel Beckett. The portrait will be hung on the fence in front of the Dworek Sierakowskich. A compound of tradition and modernity? Why not? Iwona Zajac’s mrals have all become part of Gdańsk’s cityscape. Zajac’s works are extremely striking, intriguing and thought-provoking because of their combination of originality, precision of execution, metaphoric force, and visual wit.
